Champions League was started in 2009 as the biggest t20 league in world cricket. With big prize money, sponsorships, and teams across the globes under one competition made it a attractive hub for the cricket fans. The expectations were very high but then what happened after few years, it was sacked
immediately with no much of a buzz.
Lets look at the reasons why CLt20 Discontinued.

TRP

This was the most important reason for its discontinuation. The popularity of t20 was immense and the trp rating of IPL as the best t20 league was proving it over the years. And CLt20 claimed to be the biggest was failing to grow when it comes to the trp ratings every year. With so much Money and expectations involved it was failing to attract viewership and excitement to the audience with every edition coming. Average rating : 2009- 1.06, 2010- 1.45, 2011- 1.64. It is seen that the trp was Growing over the years but the fact being it wasn’t even near to what the basic structure and organizers expected while starting the league. The average trp of inaugural edition held in India with so much of publicity and buzz received an average trp of 1.06 which was way lower than that of IPL 2009 as 4.1.

STRUCTURE

List of winners of cLT20

The structure became the problem for the tournament. If you see the IPL was clearly dominating the league and then secondly Australia. There were at least three and sometimes four teams from India, two from Australia and South Africa each. And one each from other major countries like New Zealand, West Indies etc. Sometimes the teams had to go through the Qualifiers to play the main event resulting in no representation from some major teams in the main event. This unbalanced structure became the problem for the league itself. You would notice this fact of domination that out of six editions, 4 were won by IPL teams and other 2 by Australian teams and out of six instances three times both the finalist teams were from IPL.

PLAYERS’ REPRESENTATION

We all know that the leagues happen at the different time in the calendar year and so many Major players from various cricketing nations, except from India which do not allow its players to play other leagues, were provided that liberty to play different leagues. But when it comes to champions league t20, the players had to choose one particular Team for this League. This was The Case with so many big players resulting in totally misbalance to so many teams which had limited players and resources available. The IPL teams had so many big options reserved and had the advantage in such case. On the other hand players found to be stuck in situation whether to choose for a better team where they would flourish themselves or go for the national representative team. This mess-up could be seen in every edition of the league.

SPONSORSHIP

Sponsors of CLt20 over the years

With the business perspective, this became a major factor. With so much buzz and money Involved, the league attracted the sponsors with damn ease and excitement. But with failing to achieve major growth in viewership, the sponsors tend to change regularly. Bharti Airtel had signed a five-year deal for official sponsorship of the league but they back out after three years only. Next comes Nokia Which also backed out of the sponsorship just after a Year. Karbonn Mobiles came after Nokia but same way they also back out after playing two years as the sponsors. Then came Oppo as the sponsors for the 2014 edition but are called to be last minute arrangement. So, this shows how the sponsors were backing out quickly, without even completing their terms of deal. This was a a good sign for the league and it clearly indicated the failure of the league to match up the target. This became a major factor.
